Kristin Waters Ph.D.- Principal

Kristin Waters has over twenty-three years of experience in education and returned to Denver South High School as principal in June 2011.  Prior to accepting this position, Dr. Waters served in Denver Public Schools as an Instructional Superintendent, High School overseeing half of Denver’s 24 high schools and as Assistant to the Superintendent for Innovation and Reform managing new school and policy development.  She was the principal of two Denver secondary schools where she was responsible for significant gains in student achievement.   In both 2008 and 2009, students at Bruce Randolph School demonstrated some of the highest overall growth in Denver high schools.  Her other Denver administrative positions were principal at Morey Middle School and assistant principal at Denver South High School.  Prior to moving to Colorado, Dr. Waters worked in Glendale, California at both the middle and high school levels teaching, and coordinating Title 1 and Gifted and Talented education programs. She began her career teaching language arts and French at the middle school level in south central Los Angeles.  Dr. Waters received her BA from the University of California, at Santa Barbara, her MS from Pepperdine University, and her Ph.D. at the University of Denver.

In his January 2011 State of the Union address, President Barack Obama mentioned Dr. Waters as a leader making a difference in public education.  Dr. Waters received the Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting System Be More Award in 2010 and The Denver Post named Dr. her as a Coloradan who made a difference in 2008.

Kelly Carr- Assistant Principal

Kelly Carr has spent her education career as a teacher, Instructional Coach, Dean and Assistant Principal. She attended college almost continuously during her adult life, attending Orange County Community College, Arapahoe Community College, Morgan Community College, Metro State College, University of Colorado Boulder and Denver. Prior to her teaching career, Kelly was a banker.  Before accepting the Assistant Principal position at Denver South High School, she worked for Dr. Kristin Waters as a Data Partner in Post Secondary Readiness. When not working, Kelly travels near and far as a Photographer’s Assistant for her husband Chris or spends time with her grown children.

Lynn Hawthorne- Assistant Principal

Lynn Hawthorne spent her first 23 years in the classroom building bridges between Spanish and English speaking youth.  She has taught high school in Illinois, K-9 here in Denver and pre-school-8th grade in Peru.  Besides being passionate about opening doors for students to learn, she is passionate about strengthening the professional lives of educators through meaningful professional development and collaboration.  Prior to coming to South, she worked for the Middle School Instructional Superintendent as a school partner supporting school improvement initiatives.  When she is not at school, you might find her working on her doctoral program, Educational Leadership for Equity, gardening (or preparing her chicken run for next spring's chicks), or spending precious time with her husband, Drew Loizeaux, and daughters Blythe (19) and Zoe (16).

Joe Glover- Administrative Intern

Joe Glover has 11 years of teaching experience at both the college and high school level and has been a teacher at Denver South High School for the past 9 years. Mr. Glover was accepted into the University of Denver’s Ritchie Program for School Leaders earlier this year and is currently serving as a Principal Intern while completing his principal licensure. Before starting the Ritchie Program, Mr. Glover taught AP English Language and Composition courses and posted significant growth on 3+ scores for the 2010-2011 school year. He was also the advisor for the school newspaper, The South Gargoyle, which received many awards through the American Scholastic Press Association during his time as advisor.  In 2007, he earned National Board Certification in the area of Adolescent/Young Adult English Language Arts. Before Mr. Glover moved to Colorado, he worked for two years at the University of Central Arkansas as a Writing Instructor and for Easter Seals Arkansas as a Technology Consultant. He also worked for Lion’s World Services for the Blind as a Writing and College Preparation Instructor through a joint program with UCA.  Mr. Glover received his BA and MA at the University of Central Arkansas and is currently working on his principal licensure through the University of Denver.
